Upset about France and Brazil

Welcome to a bit of a stream of consciousness i need to get out of my head so i can go back to work and trying to be a functional person.

I’m upset at the way some people are talking about the protests in France and Italy as violent extremists that need to be suppressed. I’m upset at the involvement of the US in Latin American politics, the rise of the right and its current investment in Brazil’s elections. The US wants to have favorable deals on the rare metals that Brazil has.

Both of these things signal a key concern. The world we know is ending, cheap energy and resources are running out, human driven climate change is drastically affecting settlements and sustainability on the planet and the current way of modern life has a life expectancy. Life wont end but it will be quite different without ubiquitous access to cheap energy and less hospitable weather.

Instead of attending to our common concerns and trying to build a better world, people in power are concerned about maintaining the illusion that this world wont end, keeping the comforts of it to themselves while letting folk carry the burden of consequence. In their efforts to secure more resources for themselves, to keep prolonging this way of life and pretending its alright as much as possible, they are allowing for living conditions for most people to plummet, for the economy to exclude them from any form of affordable living conditions, and then suppressing them as violent criminals for protesting for their lives. Letting far right movements take power and fuck over people’s rights, freely give their national resources to the US for some share in the benefits of those living conditions while suppressing the dissent of voices claiming for justice, rights, and recognition.

And it makes me sick when I think there is no way to stop this train from slamming against a wall, when you feel like this is where were going and there's nothing to stop this collapse from happening. And I just wish I had more I knew how to do, a proper place to speak out, a more eloquent discourse also, and I wish we could organize ourselves out of this.

But resistance also lies in imagining possible futures, in knowing that even after the inevitable collapse, new worlds ma arise, new ways of organizing ourselves and relating to each other. And cultivating those until the time is right for them to flourish is also valuable.
